The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of SA will present a new production of the world-wide hit musical Les Misérables in May 2008 at the Scott Theatre.
Based on Victor Hugo’s book by the same name, Schönberg and Boublil’s musical has been produced in 38 countries and translated into 22 languages, and is arguably the most popular musical of all time.
“I’ve got no idea why people love this musical so much”, said director multi award-winning and award-nominated director David Lampard.
“It’s long, dark and tragic but practically everyone in the world loves this show – even if they hate musicals!”
“If you had to pin it down, I guess you’d have to say it’s the incredible music, universal storyline and brilliantly drawn characters that pull people back to the theatre again and again and again.”
Lampard has performed in three separate versions of Les Misérables, including most recently beside Normie Rowe at Her Majesties Theatre.
“This is a very different version of this remarkable work”, said Lampard.
“It’s the same brilliant music – directed brilliantly by the sublime Ross Curtis – but we’ve created a unique new visual landscape for the piece.”
“We didn’t want to do what’s been done before. We want to surprise, delight and renew people’s vigour for this incredible show. We want you to look at Les Miz in a different way – and to fall in love with it all over again.”
Over 50 people well take to the stage, for this production, including many professional, award-winning and critically acclaimed performers such as Mark Oates, Trish Spence, Tom Millhouse, Andrew Crispe, Paul Talbot, Megan Humphries and Rod Schulz.
Also popping up in featured cameos are several G&S Society directors – including Ric Trevaskis and Barry Hill – and many other society stalwarts.
“We’ve got over 100 brilliantly creative and hard-working people working full throttle on this massive production”, says Lampard.
“It’s all so thrillingly big, with an enormous set that includes over 100 window frames, plus there’s almost 200 costumes being made from scratch. I’m excited!”
Les Misérables follows the life of Jean Valjean who, after being released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, meets only mistrust and contempt whilst shackled to the stigma of being an ex-convict.
Breaking his parole, he creates a new identity for himself and flees from his old life.
He is pursued obsessively by the police inspector Javert who, believing people cannot change for the better, is determined to bring him to ‘justice’.
Les Misérables is an expansive and emotionally complex journey that explores a multitude of themes and ideas, from forgiveness and self-sacrifice, to courage and hope, and ultimately, grace.
