The Small Poppies Print
Small PoppiesPlaylovers theatre in Floreat are proud to present the entertaining drama The Small Poppies written by Australian playwright David Holman. Directed by Bev Jackson-Hooper, this production will open to audiences on April 4 with a three week season. The Small Poppies follows the trials and tribulations of some very young Aussie battlers who are embarking on their first year of school in the mid 1980s. While the story focuses on five year old Clint, who must face the challenges of the school bully on top of having his best friend move away, it also follows the poignant tale of Cambodian refugee, Lep, who has lost her mother and now faces the arduous task of breaking down cultural barriers in her new country. Director Jackson-Hooper is an English and Drama teacher who has performed and directed in Australia and Chile. Bev says she is excited about the challenge of the play and the versatile script. “I originally saw The Small Poppies in Sydney starring Geoffrey Rush, I love the hard issues it explores through innocent eyes.” Bev goes on to say, “This is a fast and physical play, sure to capture the attention and imagination of all audiences and ages. It’s different, fun, important and a play which the entire family can enjoy together”.

The show features eight adult actors in some twenty roles as the children, parents and teachers facing these challenges, and is suitable for all audiences and will open at Hackett Hall on April 4 with a three week season concluding on April 19.
