While it’s fair to say Australians love sport, it is equally true that we’re not too crazy about musicals. And rightly so.
Eighteen months ago, comedian and composer Eddie Perfect set out to write a show that combined these disparate elements into one incredible spectacle. The result is SHANE WARNE THE MUSICAL; a full-throttle exploration of what it means to fall arse-backwards into the Australian Dream and emerge a champion. In a country that routinely lops its tall poppies, SHANE WARNE THE MUSICAL sets out to celebrate and understand the life of cricket’s most maligned and celebrated identity as he battles fame, failure, fidelity and the ferocious Australian media.
Eddie has set out to create a hilarious and often moving portrait of the boy from suburban Black Rock. With a cast of eight, a band of four and a score that fuses Metal, Soul, Gospel, Bollywood, Drum & Bass and Opera, SHANE WARNE THE MUSICAL is a new breed of Aussie music theatre that smokes, drinks, carries a few extra kilos and still brings home the Ashes.
The 2008 Melbourne International Comedy Festival is host to five work in progress performances of this much-anticipated project. It’s Melbourne’s exclusive chance to see this piece in action before the unwashed hordes at the show’s official opening in December 2008.
Eddie Perfect is a WAAPA trained lyricist, composer, comedian and cabaret performer who has toured Australia extensively, as well as successful seasons in Edinburgh, London and New Zealand. His solo shows, Angry Eddie (2004) and Drink Pepsi Bitch (2006) have received several awards including a Green Room Award (Best original music), a Barry Award for Best Newcomer (Melbourne Comedy Festival 2004), The Golden Gibbo Award (Melbourne Comedy Festival 2004) and a Best Cabaret Award at the 2006 Adelaide Fringe. He also won a Green Room award for Innovation in Cabaret in 2003 and has been nominated for the award seven times for everything from musical direction to Best Cabaret Artist.
