“Marriage may be a wonderful thing, but after a night like this, well, could it really be worth it?” asks Lane Cove Thetare Company
“I was married at 23 and have never regretted it for a minute!” beams Brionny Fagan, who plays the lead in Lane Cove Theatre Company's version of Elizabeth Coleman's Secret Bridesmaid's Business.
Although Brionny's own wedding 5 years ago went without a hitch as her husband Matt single handedly arranged “the most picturesque perfect wedding a girl could ever want” while Brionny was doing her lawyer training and exams, Brionny's character, Meg, is not as lucky.
It's the night before Meg's wedding. She and her bridesmaids are planning to kick up their heels just as a last minute scandal threatens to ruin the whole affair.
When it comes to an unfaithful partner, is ignorance really bliss? What would a true friend do? Do we know what's best for our friends or ourselves? What is a perfect relationship? Does it exist?
Secret Bridesmaid's Business is about the personal agendas behind weddings, marriage and friendship.
“Underneath the hilarity of the girly gossip and irrational pontificating of the mother of the bride from hell in Secret Bridesmaid's Business,” says director Gemma Harris, “bubbles an undercurrent that's not too far from our own reality.”
“I wanted to do this play because it's one which women (and men!) can identify with more than they'd probably care to admit,” says Gemma, “Acknowledging that our partners are not infallible is a harsh lesson to learn, but one which Elizabeth Coleman delivers with razor sharp irony in a well structured, intelligent, and hard-hitting comedy...As Homer Simpson says, 'it's funny because it's true'.”
Brionny agrees, “Although my life has never been difficult (my mother is my best friend and my husband would be officially put down if he were to cheat!!), I can understand the full spectrum of emotions that Meg's character must experience...the play confronts every person's worst fear - betrayal and loneliness or a life that doesn't live up to expectations?”
Cast includes Brionny Fagan, Rebecca Greensill, Solange Fauvet, Danny Rey-Conde, Monique Kinerton, and Dot Ramsay.
