Casino Royale, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies … songs which conjure images of an ageless James Bond saving the world while never stepping out of his tuxedo. On April 4 and 5 The Queensland Orchestra will pay homage to the greatest all time songs of James Bond movies in their Brisbane and Gold Coast concerts, The Best of James Bond.
Guest conductor the celebrated New York-born, UK-based Carl Davis, will lead British vocalist and long-time collaborator, Mary Carewe and The Queensland Orchestra in an evening that promises to be a wholly entertaining mix of mystery and adventure. The concerts will run the gamut of Bond films, with music and songs from From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Casino Royale (1967&2006), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), Live and Let Die (1973), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Licence to Kill (1989), i (1995), The World is Not Enough (1999), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and more.
Tom Woods, Director of Artistic Planning at the Queensland Orchestra said this was a concert designed to thrill. “The famous James Bond films are just as famous for their theme songs as they are for their glamour and excitement. We all know them, and we all love them and the orchestral journey these two concerts promise will conjure images of Ursula Andress emerging from the sea, Sean Connery in his Aston Martin and Roger Moore ordering the ubiquitous dry martini … all the classic Bond moments,” he said.
“Our guest conductor Carl Davis more than carries the orchestral equivalent of a Bond reputation. Davis has forged an extraordinary career both conducting and composing for feature films, television, silent films, ballets, musicals, converts and opera. We are lucky to have such a talented artist for the concerts here in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.”
Born in New York, Carl Davis’s early work showed great promise. In 1959, the revue Diversions won him an Obie (off-Broadway). Since then he has composed extensively for radio, film and television including: The World at War which has been re-released on DVD and CD – Last night of the Proms with Barry Humphries; the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice and Goodnight Mr. Tom. Numerous feature films include The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Scandal and Topsy Turvy.
TV series’ introduced Davis to composing full length scores for archive films, starting with the incredible 5∏ hour score for Abel Gance’s Napolean, first shown in London in 1980, leading to a further 50 full-length restorations including Ben Hur, The Thief of Bagdad, The Wind and Phantom of the Opera (shown at the Royal Opera House in 2006). He recently recorded a new documentary on Greta Garbo for Turner TV and recorded the music for all 12 of Chaplin’s ‘Mutuals’, now available on DVD.
He is in equal demand as conductor and composer for the stage, screen and concert hall, regularly conducting the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, the Halle, the Northern Sinfonia and the CBSO. Davis is Principal Guest Conductor of the Navarra Symphony Orchestra in Pamplona, and is a regular guest conductor with the Malaysian Philharmonic and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
British vocalist Mary Carewe’s versatility ranges from musical theatre showstoppers and cabaret songs to contemporary music. She has performed under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, John Rutter and Charles Hazlewood and her now long-established artistic relationship with Carl Davis has led her to sing both ‘James Bond and ‘Oscar Winners’ programmes with the main British orchestras, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Spain and soon with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Queensland Orchestra.
