As a truly enlightened despot Duchess Anna Amalia was not only a formidable political figure, she was responsible for turning Weimar into a cultural force across Western Europe, attracting major literary and artistic figures to her court. It was her particular friendship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe that led to the composition of Erwin & Elmire in (1776).
