Contemporary and classical chamber music masterpieces sit comfortably
alongside each other in TRIOZ’s second 2008 concert performance,
‘What’s in a Name?’.
As its centerpiece, this concert features the ‘Archduke Trio’ by Beethoven most famous and popular work for piano trio.
Australian/Russian composer Elena Kats Chernin’s compositions are fast
becoming modern classics. The use of her Eliza’s Aria in an
advertisement for Lloyds TSB in the UK enchanted people all over the
world, leading to over 2 million hits for the ad on You Tube and a
massive number of iTune downloads. The track was also featured in a
dance floor hit by pop diva Sarah Cracknell from the band Saint Etienne.
Kats-Chernin’s The Maiden and the Well Spirit is a narrative work drawn
from Russian mythology. It tells the tale of a young girl who loses her
life through drowning because of a well spirit with whom she has fallen
in love. At the end of the piece she is transformed into a lotus flower
for all eternity.
“Elena has written a lot of music for the theatre and ballet, and
concerts of her work are known for their unexpected, dramatic and
evocative qualities,” says Kathryn Selby. “Whenever this work is
played, audiences are transfixed by its magical and mythical qualities.”
The composer herself relishes surprising her audiences and has been
quoted as saying: “I say, ‘What is now expected of me?’ and try to do
the opposite.”
