English composer Colin Matthews’ orchestration of Debussy’s piano Preludes is a sublime instance of one artist seeing into the mind of another. The selection we hear in this program includes the beautiful Girl with the Flaxen Hair.
Beethoven completed the Second Symphony at a time when he believed he could restore his failing hearing. Finally realising that his illness was progressive and incurable, he was driven to the depths of despair, yet composed this symphony of mingled exhilaration and bliss, with its brilliant, bustling first movement and a finale of exceptional humour and brilliance.
