Passion | Australian Art Orchestra Print
passionFor one night only, Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter join the Australian Art Orchestra as guest vocalists to perform three “love songs” alongside Paul Grabowsky for a special Good Friday performance of Passion.

Inspired by the dramatic St Matthew Passion of J S Bach, the Australian Art Orchestra’s Passion captures the emotional nuances of Bach’s depiction of the final day of Christ and the triumph of the human spirit within the drama and language of contemporary music. Bach composed the St Matthew Passion in 1727, performing it at a Good Friday service on April 11 that year.

Five movements from Bach’s masterpiece (Passion According to St Matthew) were given to five composers from within the Australian Art Orchestra: Doug de Vries, Paul Grabowsky, John Rodgers, Niko Schauble and Alister Spence. Their task was not to arrange or adapt the original music, but to draw inspiration from it, and write new music that would address the same themes.

In 2005, in preparation for a tour to Festival of Mexico, the Australian Art Orchestra commissioned Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter to write three new songs. These new ‘love songs’ join Grabowsky’s existing chorale passages to give audiences one of the most extraordinary musical experiences available in modern music.

Since the birth of the Australian Art Orchestra in 1993, when Paul Grabowsky handpicked 19 players from across Australia, each one a specialist either as an improviser or instrumentalist, it has become an inspirational force in Australian music.

“This is jazz and something else at the same time. Art is the best description. Those interested in contemporary creative music should seek out the Art Orchestra…They hold a special place in Australian Music.” Financial Review
