One of the most hilarious pieces of Australian musical theatre returns to Adelaide in 2008! Presented by Company B and Adelaide Festival Centre's new program Australian Stories, KEATING! will have audiences sitting in parliament at Her Majesty's Theatre from 3 - 19 April.
KEATING! burst into life at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival where it won all available awards including the Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show, The Age Critics' Award and the Golden Gibbo. Following rave reviews across Australia, writer/creator Casey Bennetto won a 2005 Green Room Award and a 2006 Helpmann Award, both for Best Original Score.
In 2006, Bennetto teamed up with Company B Artistic Director Neil Armfield to make his outlandish and biting musical bigger and better than ever. Since then the show has enjoyed amazing sold-out seasons all over Australia, including four in Sydney and seven packed out weeks at the 2007 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and has just been nominated for an impressive six 2007 Green Room Awards.
The original KEATING! enjoyed a sell-out season at the 2006 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. The Company B production of KEATING! introduces new characters and songs and a whole new theatrical and musical experience. Adelaide audiences will be offered a comic look at the former prime minister Paul Keating's colourful time in office, as well as satirising some other well-known names from John Howard and Alexander Downer to a bouffant Bob Hawke and crooning John Hewson.
Joined by a sensational five-piece band, the cast includes the brilliant Mike McLeish as Paul Keating, Terry Serio as Bob Hawke & John Howard, and Brendan Coustley as Alexander Downer & John Hewson.
With its quick wit and sharp comic timing, KEATING! is a unique take on the larger than life characters of Australian politics and the peaks and troughs of Paul Keating's career. Casey Bennetto's scathingly hilarious lyrics tear through the reign and tragic fall of the Placido Domingo of Australian politics. Part French farce, part Greek tragedy, and all Australian history.
"Armfield's joyous, faultless production are, like its subject, replete with a gleeful panache and pizazz" Sydney Morning Herald
"It really is one of those shows you would kick yourself to miss" The Age
"As Keating, McLeish is sleek, smug, stylish and seductive" Herald Sun
