Joel Salom’s Gadgets is an exciting and eccentric roller coaster ride through technology, theatre, circus and live music. Combining Salom’s physical theatre feats with some swinging beats, spectacular laser triggering and rhythm juggling, Gadgets creates a haven for sparkling moments of improvisation and audience participation.
The Gadgets trio comprises former Circus Oz performer Joel Salom in his ubiquitous red suit with musicians Jim Dunlop and Marko Simec performing everything from classical to pop, jazz to death metal, and gypsy swing for good measure.
Gadgets also features a very special guest, Salom’s alter ego Erik the Dog, a 2-foot tall, fast-talking, arsesniffing “remote-controlled tin terrier” phenomenon. A regular on ABC TV’s O’Loughlin on Saturday Night (‘99), Erik the Dog is a favourite with audiences with his sharp, irreverent, smooth-talking attitude.
Salom is simultaneously a comic improviser, rapper, juggler, gadget man and MC extraordinaire who with Erik the Dog has performed at festivals on all five continents. For two years Salom toured with Circus Oz (‘02 – ‘04), he was seen as the flying Master of Ceremonies on Sydney Harbour during the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has been nominated for a MO Award for “Best Comedy Talent”.
For the last 4 years Dunlop has been the idiot drummer for Circus Oz, as well as devising acts, emceeing and clowning. He has extensive experience playing, devising, and performing with bands, theatre, cabaret, circus, dance, TV and film.
Simec was brought up with music running through his veins. A multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer with 16 years industry experience, he starting playing piano at the age of 4, and has maintained his tenacity and drive for inspired music ever since. He has worked with productions as diverse as circus, large scale street theatre, short films, theatre, comedy and bands, currently performing with the notorious Gypsy Punk jazz band Waiting for Guinness.

“The irrepressible Joel Salom is an outstanding all-round comic,
whether as a skilfully inept acrobat or artfully off-colour juggler…” San Francisco Chronicle
“The wittiest member of the crew is Erik the Dog. A
remote-controlled tin terrier who rolls around the stage, chats up the
front row and extols the joys of “sniffing all my friends' bums”.
Predictably, the kids squeal, the parents groan and the critics quietly
shut their notebooks.” Time Out, New York
“Half Terminator. Half Puppy. Definitely a cult icon in the making.” The Scotsman
“A manic display of juggling that brings together digital technology, live jazz-metal from Jim Dunlop and Marko Simec and the musing of Erik, a potty mouthed, remotely controlled metal dog.” Sun Herald
