Urban Rooms Print
Following on from the recent success of Ballroom, an exhibition of photographs of the disused ballroom of the Flinders Street Railway Station projection artist Yenny Huber is hot footing her talents to a multi-media installation performance which will premiere in Sydney on Tuesday 19th February before winging its way to Vienna and London. This time Huber will be in cahoots with dancer Fiona Malone, Viennese sound artist Marcus Zobl and soprano Xenia Hanusiak.

“Urban Rooms” is a photographic based project presenting a multi-sensory experience for the viewer - a visual journey through the multiple layers of urban space, human life and emotion.

Austrian born Yenny captures the ethereal beauty and often overwhelming loneliness of the urban space that surrounds us. A stillness with an engaging complexity is visible within each piece.

The project visibly confronts the loneliness somehow present in large cities. In this context, loneliness refers to the emptiness within as well as the physical and psychological distance between people. This visual loneliness does not however diminish the nostalgic beauty of the urban space.

Huber will be presenting 11 new large scale photographic pieces. Each artwork is formed out of a minimum of two, but in some pieces several overlapping frames captured within the camera, on one film. This technique was developed to truly capture the complexity of the scene and is further emphasised by the vibrant and distinct presentation of colour. Even though the images are scanned and carefully prepared for printing, everything essential and defining for the image is performed within the camera. No digital manipulation is used to produce the final large format prints.

Performance
The Urban Rooms project also incorporates performance movement and projection. Densely layered images of urban spaces are projected onto large screens opposing one another and will capture the audience in between. Viewers will be become voyeurs, centre stage they look simultaneously into and out of the “projection windows” watching the continuously changing imagery of their own urban lives and surroundings.

Contemporary dancer Fiona Malone will shadow her performance from behind the project screen creating a visual exploration of the direct physical and emotional human response to an urban space.

Furthermore her performance also represents the viewer’s own “reflection”, the “figure” in our urban surrounding - the anonymous character in contemporary society and the related loneliness present in any large metropolis.

Acclaimed Soprano Xenia Hanusiak will be working with sound composer Marcus Zobl from Vienna to create a haunting and emotive live sound score to complement the movement and imagery.
