You won’t ever know. You’ll be caught out like everyone else. You’ll go up in smoke.

Twenty-five years ago, Michael Gow launched his career with an extraordinary play that took Australian theatre by storm. Now, twenty years after Peter Kingston’s acclaimed Griffin production, The Kid returns to the SBW Stables Theatre from 22 March - introducing a new generation of rising young actors.

Directed by Tom Healey, the story of The Kid with its themes of disillusioned youth, fractured communities and rural exodus is as relevant as ever. Foreshadowing Away, it too charts a family’s epic summer journey. But this is a very different family - and a very different destination.

In blazing heat, a stolen mini hurtles towards Sydney. Inside, three teenagers from the country - Snake, Aspro and Dean - plan a future that will begin when they collect Aspro’s accident compo from the Department. Joined by Donald, an opera fanatic desperate for a change of scene, they travel to the city to take up residence in ‘the largest block of flats in the Southern Hemisphere’.

As bush fires rage on the edge of the city, they meet Desiree, a young girl from downstairs with apocalyptic predictions…

Griffin has enjoyed a long association with Michael Gow, having presented five of his plays (Away, The Kid, Europe, Live Acts on Stage and Sweet Phoebe ) over the last twenty-five years. Now Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company, Michael’s other plays include the much-acclaimed Toy Symphony, The Astronaut’s Wife, On Top Of The World, 1841, All Stops Out, Furious, Up Here and a stage adaptation of The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.

Continuing Griffin’s legacy for showcasing emerging talent, alongside Mark Pegler and Kelly Butler, the cast includes some of Australia’s most talented young actors, with - Akos Armont, Eamon Farren, Emma Palmer, Andrew Ryan and Yael Stone.
