While facing yet another blow in his life, Luke writes a fictional story for his daughter, Rebecca. When things go from bad to worse, one of Luke’s characters becomes surprisingly real!
In Rebecca’s Story, Kate Mandalovic exploits the conventions and clichés of film noir to create an engaging play about families, relationships and the power of the imagination to shape reality.
“Rebecca’s Story was written in my last year of high school and told of my own yearning for a hero,” Kate says. “Now it is still true to its original plot but has evolved to be more about life and family!
“The rehearsals have been an amazing experience. The actors have allowed me the opportunity to learn, develop the play even more and polish the script. I’ve also learned a great many things about theatre conventions.”
Rebecca’s Story will be presented as a moved play-reading, with the actors retaining their scripts and minimal set pieces, props and costuming. This simplified, work in progress form of presentation allows new work to be shown and to test its potential for fuller presentation.
Kate Mandalovic is a University of Adelaide Arts student who is also an accomplished runner. She won the Bay Sheffield Women’s Race in 2005, and last year won the 70m sprint in the 2007 Bay Sheffield. She was also a finalist in the 2007 Young Australian of the Year awards.
“I started running at the age of 15 because I had a competitive spirit I couldn’t suppress,” Kate says. “Writing and running are both parts of me I can’t detach from, despite the difference.”
