Seven | Leigh Warren & Dancers Print
The 2008 Adelaide Fringe will be the launching pad for the Australian premiere season of Seven – an emotionally charged and thought-provoking new dance theatre production from South Australia’s Leigh Warren & Dancers – inspired by the classic  fairy tale ‘Snow White’ and guaranteed to get audiences’ blood rushing with its passionate themes of love, jealousy and betrayal!

Seven tells the story of seven people who share a common but unfortunate trait – they are all in love with the illusion of love. In its unique interpretation of the ‘Snow White’ fairy tale – this unpredictable production questions every aspect of its storyline. Was Snow White actually a spoilt brat? Did she perhaps suffer from a father-fixation complex? Why do step-mothers get such bad press and - most importantly – do all princes fall in love at first sight?

In a major coup, celebrated Australian set designer Dan Potra has joined the team helping artistic director/choreographer Leigh Warren, realise his vision for this production. Dan designs for theatre, opera, dance, film, TV and large scale events nationally and internationally – including the memorable ‘Deep Sea Dreaming’ and ‘Tin Symphony’ segments of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. “Dan’s ingeniously inventive design will see a space where anything can happen,” says Leigh Warren. “His experience and input will make this dance play come to life.” The Seven creative team also boasts award-winning local designer India Flint (costume designer) – with Ian Moorhead & Adam Synnott composing the music, in association with Sascha Budimski.

After presenting several large-scale collaborations in 2007, Seven is an opportunity to bring the company’s entire focus back to dance – its primary art form. “The technically virtuosic movement language employed in this production is the result of workshopping the narrative components of the fairy tale itself,” says Warren. “Physical theatre techniques are used to uncover an emotionally expressive movement language. Seven allows the movement to speak for itself – producing both the surprise and accessibility of a screenplay.”

To be presented at Adelaide’s intimate and historic Royalty Theatre in the heart of the city, Seven shines the spotlight brightly on this award-winning company’s immensely talented ensemble of local dancers: Lisa Griffiths, Deon Hastie, Kynan Hughes, Alisdair Macindoe, Gala Moody, Jo Roads & Adam Synnott.

“Over the past 12 months, the company has been privileged to work with an amazing number of talented individuals and groups – including celebrated Japanese choreographer Uno Man with the Wanderlust production– as well as the incredible Adelaide Vocal Project singers with Satyagraha. However, it’s wonderful to be placing our major focus back on our core dancers with a new piece which showcases their enormous breadth of talent,” says Warren.
