Sydney Opera House proudly presents legendary Seville-based Eva Yerbabuena and her company Ballet Flamenco in their first ever Sydney season in the Concert Hall from 23 – 26 January, 2007.
Hailed
as one of the major forces in the flamenco world today, and following
sell-out seasons at festivals in New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong and
throughout Europe, Yerbabuena will present her signature production Eva with her company of six exceptional dancers and seven musicians.
Treating audiences to a world of song, dance and lyrical poetry, Eva expresses a woman's search for independence, fusing rich flamenco traditions with contemporary dance sequences.
Performing live onstage is Yerbabuena’s husband, guitarist Paco Jarano,
who leads with dazzling skill and verve a group of three full-blooded
male vocals, two guitarists, a percussionist and flautist through the
layered melodic music and songs from the Andalusian region of Spain.
In Eva, Yerababuena performs many of her dances as solos; the Granaína,
expertly executed in a ruffled bata de cola (tail dress), and her
signature palo Soleá, expressing the ‘deep’ soul of a dancer.
With critical accolades for sheer magnetism, Yerbabuena
is one of the most exciting flamenco artists working today. Celebrated
for her pure and timeless flamenco style she moves her arms and torso
with distinctive fluidity. Contrasting with the flashy, external style
and staging commonly seen elsewhere, her simplicity reveals facets of
human nature – the underlying purpose of everything she does.
Yet,
her dance also has richness - unleashing her dramatic footwork with
speed and eloquent passion, she epitomises the unadulterated technical
prowess that make up this enduring art form.
Standing barely five-feet tall Yerbabuena
is a towering presence on the international flamenco circuit. The
recipient of every major Spanish award for choreography, including
Spain's most prestigious dance honour, the 2001 Premio Nacional de
Danza, she has also won the Flamenco Hoy for Best Dancer for three
consecutive years, and at the 11th Biennial in Seville in 2000 received
the Best Performance and Best Ballerina honours for her work.
Yerbabuena established Ballet Flamenco Dance Company in 1998. Since then, the company has toured the world introducing audiences to many of flamenco’s talented younger artists.
The daughter of an emigrant Spanish worker, Yerbabuena has been involved in flamenco all her life. Acknowledged by the leading contemporary choreographer, William Forysthe as one of his great inspirations, she has also collaborated with the revered German contemporary dance director, Pina Bausch and Oscar-winning film director Mike Figgis. Yerababuena has featured in two films by Figgis,
Flamenco Women (which screened on Australian TV) and, alongside John
Malkovich and Salma Hayek in HOTEL. She was also the star of Stomp’s
award-winning IMAX presentation of Pulse.
A bewitching and dramatic actress, Yerbabuena redefines flamenco while remaining true to the art form's pure rhythms and soulful roots.
