Brecht pioneered the theatrical technique known as Epic Theatre because he wanted people to think while they felt. With songs and satire, slapstick and subtlety, pathos and politics his plays exploded into the world and changed theatre for ever. This is his masterpiece.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle, drawing on an ancient Chinese tale, tells the deeply touching story of a servant girl who rescues a child of royal blood from a violent coup and becomes its surrogate mother. The play draws on all of Brecht’s virtuosity and climaxes in a bizarre competition between the servant girl and the child’s biological mother to determine where the child belongs.
In a production bursting with song and movement, the HotBed artists rework this classic in a dynamic contemporary setting.
