The Club | HIT Productions Print
The Club | HIT ProductionsStarring 2006 Gold Logie Winner, John Wood, THE CLUB is David Williamson at his best. The Club is about people in groups and the institutions they inhabit. It’s a story about egotism, commitment, power, jealousy and greed. The story covers the transition of Australian sport and Australian business.  The culture and rituals of an old football club are torn to shreds as the might dollar takes over.

Lead actor John Wood said “People do identify with the fact that it’s not necessarily about Aussie Rules, the play is much more universal than that, it’s about any committee organisation, rugby club, school council or mother’s group -  the factionalism and jealousy and greed and lust for power that goes on.

“I think it’s incredibly clever, as relevant today, certainly in terms of the football world as it was 30 years ago.  During our first week of rehearsal, Neil Daniher was sacked from Melbourne Football Club and by the time we’d opened, three other coaches around the country had been sacked. This play is basically about a football club trying to get rid of the president and sack the coach.  So the play is right on the money.”

Joining John on stage will be an exceptional cast including Christopher Connelly (HIT’s Hotel Sorrento), Denis Moore (Malthouse’s The Spook), Christopher Parker (Oklahoma) and Simon Wilton (Playbox’s Still Angela).

“But The Club belongs to the one-time jock, played with finesse by John Wood.  He’s an excellent stage actor with the technique and presence to make an audience believe in the person he’s pretending to be.” Sydney Morning Herald
