After playing to sold-out theatres from London’s Hammersmith Apollo to
New York’s Madison Square Garden, world-wide comedy phenomenon Russell
Peters returns to Australia following huge demand with his show
‘Russell Peters & Friends’. The all-new show features Peters as
host, and performing with two of his favourite comics from back in the
States – Ahmed Ahmed and Jo Koy.
The 18 year comic veteran brings his all-new act, plus special guest
DJ, ‘Starting From Scratch’ to Australia. “Scratch is one of the best
DJs and turntablists in the world. He has been opening for me across
Canada and will now be my DJ in the UK, South Africa, Madison Square
Garden, Los Angeles and now Australia” tells Peters.
In June, Peters performed for over 30,000 fans over two nights at
Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. Both shows were sold-out – a first for
any comic at the world-famous home of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey
team. A total of 70,000 plus fans turned out to support the
international funny man during his recent ‘Homecoming Tour’ in just
five cities across Canada.
Not satisfied with being the best-known comic in Canada, Peters sold
over 27,000 tickets during two tours of Australia and New Zealand in
2006. He also did five nights of sold-out shows in Singapore, two
back-to-back sold-out shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre and a sold-out
tour of the UK in 2006. Peters’ last tour of Oz took place in December
2006.
“The Australian fans are some of the best fans in the world and have
been so supportive of me over the past few years that I wanted to give
them something new this time round”, Peters says referring to the new
three-man show. “Ahmed Ahmed is a great comic and we’re very lucky to
have him. He’s a veteran of both Vince Vaughn’s ‘Wild West Comedy
Show’ and ‘The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour”, Peters says. “Jo Koy is
hilarious and will definitely be the next big thing globally. He’s
also a good friend of mine and has a huge following across North
America.”
Egyptian born Ahmed Ahmed grew up in Riverside, California, where his
parents emigrated when he was one month old. Ahmed can be seen in such
films and television shows as Executive Decision, Swingers, Tracey
Takes on, Roseanne, JAG, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn on Comedy Central
and MTV’s Punk’d. Much of Ahmed’s comedy is based around his
Middle-Eastern ancestry and the various challenges that that brings to
growing up in America.
Jo Koy was recently named one of “10 Comics to Watch” for 2007 by Daily
Variety. Koy’s lively physical presence and charismatic and
approachable persona has made him a regular on Jay Leno’s Tonight
Show. In 2005, Koy received his highest honour after his performance
on the Tonight Show received a standing ovation for his performance
that night – one of only a select few to ever receive a standing
ovation in the history of the show. Koy’s performance covers a variety
of topics from his ambiguous ethnicity to his life as a father. Koy
has just completed his latest comedy special for Comedy Central and is
working on his new variety show for the same network.
“Yes I’ll be hosting the show on this tour, but I will also be
performing my material on stage over the course of the night” Peters
advises. “I know the fans will love what they’ll see at these shows.
They’re going to be fantastic shows!”
Earlier this year, Peters completed his first ever tour of the
‘Motherland’, India. Tickets for the shows sold so quickly that the
promoter was left scrambling for additional venues to meet the demand.
After India he performed a series of shows in Dubai, where tickets sold
at a rate of one ticket every two seconds and there was a near-riot at
the retail outlets (who refused to sell the additional shows after
their employees feared for their lives).
Peters says "All this travelling around just helps me come up with new
material. I see things. I talk about them. That's what I do.”
His last DVD/CD release, ‘Russell Peters Outsourced’ sold over 100,000
copies in Canada alone. Peters will be shooting his latest DVD at
Madison Square Garden on February 2nd, 2008 for release in mid-2008.
The February / March Australian tour comes complete with video screens
and will be shot with three cameras so that all the fans can get a good
look at the rubber-faced funny man and his friends. Get your tickets
early warns Peters. “We generally don’t do any advertising for my
tours – the fans find out about the show dates from my website, or from
our fan registry and somehow the shows go on-sale and suddenly
sell-out! I can’t wait to get back to my other ‘home’. I can’t tell
you how much I’ve missed my fans in Australia. These shows with Ahmed
Ahmed and Jo Koy are going to be off the hook!”
