Blackbird | Sydney Theatre Company Print
Una (Paula Arundell) and Ray (Peter Kowitz) had a cataclysmic relationship 15 years ago. It’s a relationship that has defined their lives. Ray has a new identity and wants to put the past behind. Una has thought of nothing else.

Now she returns to his workplace for a confrontation. A titanic struggle ensues.

David Harrower’s Blackbird asks very difficult questions: When is love abuse? When is the victim the perpetrator? And can we ever break free from the shackles of the past?

With remarkable sensitivity playwright David Harrower cuts through one of society’s most unsettling taboos, leaving the audience to struggle with the uneasy tension between love and abuse.

The smash-hit of the Edinburgh Festival, Blackbird won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play and has had sell-out seasons on the West End and Broadway. The Sunday Express called Blackbird “a smash-hit! The most stimulating, provocative and gripping night in town”, and the Sunday Telegraph said “Unmissable….this is a modern tragedy, full of pity and terror”.

Brilliant, unnerving and controversial, Blackbird explores our taboos and conceptions of love, abuse and that much-abused neologism ‘closure’. In Ray and Una, Harrower has created two complex and damaged individuals, full of rage, sweetness, fear and a strange, disturbing affinity.

Blackbird is an unmissable powerhouse piece of theatre.

Una:
    You left me alone...
    You left me in love.
