The ACO’s 2008 season begins with the welcome the return of wonder-pianist Melvyn Tan, a master of Mozart. He will perform Mozart’s lively and vivacious Piano Concerto No.19 – a perfect fit.
As a recitalist, chamber musician, concerto soloist and recording artist, Melvyn Tan’s career has taken him to prestigious venues worldwide, for concerts with an impressive array of the world’s finest musicians. Whilst his early fascination with the fortepiano initially established his formidable reputation as a performer on that instrument (he performed the fortepiano solos for the BBC's highly successful dramatisation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice) the majority of his time is now devoted to the modern piano.
The performance begins with Haydn’s Symphony No. 47. A feature of the third movement, where the first half of each section is played in mirror image in the second, has led to the Symphony’s nickname, ‘The Palindrome’.
Composed in 1988, Strung Out by British-Australian composer Roger Smalley is also included in the program. The title refers to the way the orchestra are placed on stage – a symmetrical formation of four violins, viola, cello, double-bass, cello, viola and the remaining four violins, ‘strung out’ across the stage in a straight line as opposed to the usual semi-circle.
An arrangement for orchestra of Franz Schubert’s powerful String Quartet No.15 will complete the concert program. Written during Schubert’s final illness and published posthumously, it is a spiritually profound work.
