A fascinating distillation and interpretation of Shakespeare’s play by an extraordinary trio of actors.
It is appropriate that this play is performed in the aftermath of this election: King Lear attempts to retain the power he claims to be abdicating, using his beloved daughter to maintain control of his kingdom. Her refusal to accept his offer, an offer he claims to make for love of her, leads him to reject her and launch into political decisions that bring about chaos, the destruction of the kingdom, and the loss of the one he really loves.
Richard Davey first produced King Lear forty years ago in Adelaide and has produced it since in Perth, New York and Hobart. The Madness of King Lear is the first time he has performed the role, in a play which explores and unfolds the heart of Shakespeare’s great work.
He is joined by two extraordinary actors from Atypical Theatre: Kiruna Stamell, an Australian now based in Manchester UK and established as a performer in UK and Europe; and Emma Hawkins, recently fascinating audiences in Melbourne and Sydney in the award-winning One More Than One. Together these two short-statured performers form Atypical Theatre. They met while working on different projects for Sydney Theatre Company. After receiving compliments on behalf of the each other, they decided it was time to meet. Instead of seeing the other as competition for the scarce number of roles available to short-statured people they formed a partnership and the Atypical Theatre was born.
