 It’s New Year’s Eve 1999. An old Marrickville house becomes a world where stories of the old, the young, the past and the imagined collide…
Tessa, a dynamic young woman, is determined to secure her future by renovating and selling her family home. However, the previous owner isn’t quite ready to give it up. Meanwhile, Tessa’s new husband is fascinated by the trove of offerings the old house has to offer. When the troubled brother-in-law arrives, their combined night journeys take each on a difficult road to self-discovery.
Take Away Theatre’s premiere production of Night Journeys by Bill Kokkaris is a bittersweet drama which reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary.
The strong cast features Natalie Alexopolous (Kookaburra’s recent Company, Grounds for Marriage for Take Away Theatre, touring productions of Leader of the Pack and Mamma Mia), Barbara Gouskas, Matthew Halliday and Benni Silvester.
Bill Kokkaris’ writing credits include Parthenon Air (2002) and To Baraki (1999) and he was also a writer for Sidetrack Theatre’s It’s a Father (2006) and It’s a Mother (2005). Night Journeys is directed by Khristina Totos whose credits include Diving for Pearls (Ensemble), Lipstick Dreams (Theatre South), Agnes of God (Canberra Rep), Milk & Honey (La Boite), Stags & Hens (PACT) and Witchplay (Edinburgh Fringe Festival). Her previous productions for Take Away include Forty Lounge Café and The Bourgeois Gentleman.
Take Away Theatre is Sydney’s premier professional Greek-Australian theatre company and seeks to present relevant, accessible and contemporary works which explore themes of multicultural Australia. Based in Marrickville and active over 15 years, it has staged many successful productions including last year’s sell-out season of Androula Kavallaris’ Grounds for Marriage, starring Zoe Carides.
