Construction of the Human Heart Print
Construction of the Human Heart has been described by critics as “a rich example of the possibilities of play writing” which is “enormously involving and rewarding”.

Nominated in 2005 for Best Male Actor, Best Female Actor, Best Writer and Best Production, Construction of the Human Heart enjoyed an equally successful and critically acclaimed return season at the Malthouse Theatre in 2006, with The Australian describing it as “a deeply moving meditation on the transformative powers of art”.

The play follows the stories of a Couple - known only as Him and Her - who are attempting to deal with a devastating loss. Playwrights themselves, they each wrap their tale of grief in words, flicking backwards and forwards between the memories, places and moments which make up a life, constructing an imaginative fortress to alleviate their pain.

Are we witnessing a rehearsed reading of a play? Or are we seeing the real story played out onstage? The line between fact and fiction is blurred and not all is as it seems. Finally, their script is abandoned for the truth and the two are forced to face reality.

This production features a stellar creative team of Maria Theodorakis and Todd MacDonald (The Secret Life of Us, Blue Heelers, Neighbours) in the roles of the Couple and is directed by Brett Adam, with a sound score by Casey Bennetto (Keating!),

Attracting no less than four Green Room Award nominations when it first premiered in 2005, Construction of the Human Heart, is an emotionally powerful play by Geelong-based playwright Ross Mueller who Theatre Notes Australia described as “one of the most intelligent, formally adventurous and emotionally brave playwrights now writing in this country”.

“It's a short, sharp, emotional, funny and affecting ride, and one of the best newish Australian plays seen in Sydney this year.” Sydney Morning Herald October 2007
