Sydney theatre lovers will soon get the chance to experience Wal Cherry Award-winning Ross Mueller’s Construction of the Human Heart as it makes its way to Belvoir St Theatre in October after successful seasons in Melbourne and Perth.
Nominated for five Green Room Awards, a New York Dramatists Award and a 2007 AWGIE Award, Construction of the Human Heart, is a powerful and intelligent dramatic experience for true theatre lovers.
Two playwrights, grieving the loss of their son, attempt to deal with their tragedy in the only way they know: by constructing a fortress of words. Ross Mueller (The Ghost Writer, No Man's Island) integrates form and content to produce an ambitious and entirely original theatrical meditation on loss and the redemptive qualities of art and communication.
Are we witnessing a play rehearsal, or the desperate games of a fractured couple determined to keep their story alive? Seamlessly transitioning between fiction and reality, Construction of the Human Heart reveals the contradictory human desire to fuel our memories, whilst concurrently letting them go.
Starring Maria Theodorakis (Halifax F.P, Stingers, AFI Best Actress Award, Film Critic’s Circle Best Actress Award, IF Best Actress nomination) and Todd MacDonald (The Secret Life of Us, Blue Heelers, Neighbours), and directed by Brett Adam (Athena Rising, Something to Die For) with a sound score by Casey Bennetto (Keating!), the Belvoir St Theatre season of Construction of the Human Heart commences on Wednesday 10th October.
Construction of the Human Heart is the eighth play in the 2007 B Sharp season – a partnership program that showcases the inspiring work of independent theatre companies in a nurturing environment.
"One of the pleasures of Mueller's play certainly is its wit, but this is a work of real emotional power, a genuinely moving reflection on the power of the human mind to render the unspeakable in words and on the ultimate inability of words to deal with the deepest of grief." – The Sunday Age
“Mueller’s script is a rich, rewarding example of the possibilities of play writing. Brett Adams’ direction is a model of the craft of direction.” – The Age
“The Play’s unorthodox structure gives it an edge-of-the-seat quality that demands audience attention” – The Australian
