Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical has farewelled Sydney after a highly successful world premiere season in which it was seen by over 500,0000 people. It is now on its way to Melbourne and will open at The Regent Theatre on Saturday, 6 October 2007.
Priscilla is an all-Australian production quite unlike any other – featuring 20 full-scale production numbers and a sensational song list including disco hit classics I Will Survive, Finally and Shake Your Groove Thing. Directed by Melbourne’s own Simon Phillips, the road movie turned road musical features the star of both – Priscilla the bus – now transformed into a glittering custom-built, 6 tonne, $1 million centrepiece on stage. Oscar®-winning costume designers from the film Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel have expanded their outlandish creations from the film into over 500 eye-popping costumes.
Priscilla tells the funny and moving story of three fish out of water who head west across the desert from Sydney to Alice Springs to perform a drag show. In the driver’s seat is Bernadette, the former Les Girl star, played by musical theatre veteran Tony Sheldon (The Producers). Taking on the role of Tick, who organises the desert adventure, is Jeremy Stanford (Buddy, Certified Male, High Society), and in charge of the bubbles is the flamboyant and unpredictable Adam, played by rising star Daniel Scott (Dusty). Keeping them all in check (and on the road) is down-to-earth Bob the mechanic, played by Australian screen legend Michael Caton, while Colette Mann takes on the role of Shirley, the battle-axe pub owner of Broken Hill.
