One of Australia’s most exciting theatre companies Hothouse Theatre, brings its hit production of The Messiah to Frankston Arts Centre for three performances only.
The Messiah is the story of two rather incompetent,
over-ambitious amateur actors who attempt to produce the ultimate
Christmas story with a cast of two, an over-zealous opera singer and
very little else. Each actor plays a myriad of roles, from Mary and Joseph, King Herod, the Archangel Gabriel via Balthasar (the wisest of all the wise men of all time) and various street vendors in downtown Bethlehem to . . . well, God.
The production is touring regional centres following a successful season in Brisbane in December 2006. Directed by Jon Halpin, Associate Director at Queensland Theatre Company, the play stars Jean-Marc Russ as the self important writer/director of the nativity play, Hayden Spencer as the shambolic and humble Owen Blunt, general all-round dogs-body or ‘the cast’, and Carita Farrer as Mrs Barbara Redmond Bird, who, bird-like, breaks into operatic song at inappropriate moments.
The results are hilarious as the cast’s artistic ambition is constantly
compromised by their lack of resources, but ultimately realised thanks
to their unlimited optimism and spirit.
First performed in the UK in 1986 and now a favourite with British audiences, The Messiah, written by Patrick Barlow,
is a beautiful, whimsical play within a play that is a gentle and
sympathetic send-up of the British amateur theatrical tradition.
