| Gabriela Montero in Recital |

Unusually for a classical musician, Gabriela Montero is a great improviser, inviting the audience to suggest subjects on which she extemporises in her funky/classical style. Apt, then, that she starts her recital with the music of Bach, hailed in his day for his brilliance as an improviser. In Busoni’s transcription of Bach’s great Chaconne, a seemingly spontaneous sequence of virtuosic variations builds to an overwhelmingly grand climax. Siloti’s transcription of the famous A minor Violin Concerto is a Romantic portrait of Bach, emotive and rich. Ginastera’s Piano Sonata has a sultry emotional climate. Robustly modern but neo-Romantic, the sonata contrasts lush melody with propulsive rhythmic drive.
