Mozart visited Italy as a youngster and Mediterranean sunlight seeped into his music forever. While his famous Piano Concerto No.21 was composed much later, it has a certain Italianate quality, a lightness of touch, a simplicity that has beguiled listeners for centuries. The second movement of this concerto has been used in movies to evoke a dreamy, summery wistfulness, one which graceful and technically brilliant pianist Orli Shaham will capture perfectly. As a prelude, the youthful charm of Rossini’s String Sonata, composed when he was 12, presages the mature Rossini’s tuneful flair. And we round out our tour with a visit to Italy’s past as Respighi renovates the ancient airs and dances of 16th-century songwriters for modern instruments and ears, in strains that range from deliciously melancholy (‘It is sad to be in love with you’) to sweetly uplifting.
