Sparks fly in Stravinsky’s Firebird, a spectacular synthesis of Russian fairytales. With its glittering orchestration and lush exoticism, Stravinsky’s music was a sensation at the ballet’s Paris premiere, launching the career of the 20th century’s star composer. This is a rare opportunity to hear The Firebird in its dramatic entirety, a gorgeously coloured musical legend.
Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto has an astringent charm that has endeared it to audiences for decades. Its modernist contours are softened by the grace of the 18th century: imagine Mozart meets Hungarian folk music. One of the most technically demanding concertos in the repertoire, it’s a thrilling display-piece for the virtuosity of pianist Yefim Bronfman, whose Bartók piano concertos won a Grammy for best Classical recording.
