As one wag quipped, Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto ‘begins with Bach and ends with Offenbach’: travelling from a stately baroque aria in the first movement to a feverish tarantella finale. Of course, there are plenty of luscious melodies and virtuoso passages in between to display soloist Simon Trpceski’s dazzling technique. Strauss’ best-loved tone poem begins with ‘once upon a time’ and depicts the antics of the incorrigible German folk-hero Till Eulenspiegel. Things look grim for Till when he is arrested and hanged, but you can’t keep a good rogue down. Sibelius’ most popular symphony begins with a gentle song and ends in an outburst of triumphant optimism. With its abundant melodies and heroic cast, it’s no wonder that the Second Symphony established Sibelius as the voice of Finland.
