The first of Mahler’s world-encompassing symphonies begins in a kind of Eden, surrounded by the awakening radiance of nature, evoking wild jubilation. In the second movement the hero wanders through the world, in the third we see his funeral at which woodland creatures mourn but also mock him, and in the finale he weathers the storms of life to finally triumph over death. Mahler’s First Symphony is a quintessential Romantic Bildungsroman (coming-of-age story): an inspiring journey on an epic scale. In a sinfonia concertante several soloists share the spotlight; it’s a gathering of friends for a scintillating musical conversation. Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante for winds and strings is typically genial.
