Latin American Nights Print
Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges says the tango was inspired by the ‘streets and dusks’ of Buenos Aires, the sultry dance of the bordellos and slums. Ástor Piazzolla tamed the tango but preserved its violent passions in his concert works. Piazzolla’s concerto for bandoneón (a kind of accordion) showcases the many moods of that most seductive of dances, ranging from anger to joy. Acclaimed bandeonista Carel Kraayenhof will perform with his signature intensity. Piazzolla’s teacher Ginastera also captured the musical soul of his country. In the case of his ballet Estancia, it was the music of the Argentine cowboy, with evocations of the grasslands, strumming guitars and rancher machismo. Revueltas’ dazzling La Noche de los Mayas (The Night of the Mayas) brings to vivid life the rituals of ancient Mexico, a celebration of archaic energy and tropical colour. Young maverick Kristjan Järvi conducts with his trademark dynamism.
