| Brahms’ ‘Fifth Symphony’ |

Brahms wrote four symphonies. Schoenberg, in an act of homage to his hero, created a ‘Fifth’, with a virtuoso orchestration of Brahms’ substantial piano quintet. Expanding the quintet magnificently to symphonic forces, Schoenberg reveals a wealth of colour and detail. Conductor Paul Daniel has forged an exciting career in opera houses and concert halls around the world and, with his appointment to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, in Australia.
The cello is prophet and king in Bloch’s Schelomo, evoking with its grand and profound voice the majesty of King Solomon. Bloch hoped to express the ‘complex, ardent and agitated soul that vibrates in the Bible’ with music as exotic and intense as Solomon’s world. The New York Times has called soloist Ralph Kirshbaum ‘one of the most outstanding cellists of his generation’.
