Bolero, with its slow-burn tension and furious release, has been called ‘an exultation of the erotic’. At the other extreme, the wonders and terrors of childhood fascinated Ravel and he evokes them with sophisticated naivety in Mother Goose. Like every fairytale, it has a happy ending in a glittering enchanted garden. The baroque dance forms of Le Tombeau de Couperin pay double homage to the rich tradition of French culture represented by the great harpsichordist Couperin and to friends Ravel lost in World War I. Ravel hides powerful emotion behind an elegant antique mask. According to Ravel, music is un divertissement deluxe, a luxurious distraction, but often in his works strong feelings lie beneath the opulent exterior.
