Forbidden Fruit - Under the Great Wall
is a dance spectacular in the Romeo and Juliet tradition, it is a love
story like no other. Taking the social life of the merchants of China
as its background this exquisite and colourful dance work captures the
beauty and mystery of a China long ago. With over 65 dancers Forbidden
Fruit will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne, on Thursday 4
October for 6 performances only, and the brand new Star Theatre, Star
City, Pyrmont, on Thursday 11th October for 6 performances.
Forbidden Fruit tells a tragic but beautiful love story in the
language of a dramatic dance spectacle that is unique, precise and
vivid. The wild jujube, a type of fruit widely seen in north China,
symbolises the straightforward, faithful and resolute character of the
northern Chinese people. It is a symbolism that has stood the test of
time over 500 years. It is the lasting spirit of the merchants of
Shan’xi province and it embodies the spirit of our protagonists – the
young girl and her lover – who long for a better future and struggle to
change their fate.
Forbidden Fruit has been seen by over 3 million people in three hundred sensational performances in China, and Japan, South Korea, and Russia.
This first visit to Australia is in recognition of the official
celebrations for the 35th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Relationship
between China and Australia.
Forbidden Fruit is choreographed by the famous acclaimed dance
director Zhang Jigang, who is Executive Deputy Director of the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. He is Director of
the 2008 Beijing Paralympics Games opening and closing ceremonies, and
has produced more than 400 dance dramas, including “Wild Zebra”,
“Brother Ba’gui”, and his famous dance “One-thousand-hands Guanyin (a
Bodhi-sattva)”.
Forbidden Fruit, like its name, is a dramatic dance sensation of
passion, colours, and movement from across the many Asian cultures. A
stunning pastiche of emotion through dance, Forbidden Fruit will thrill
and excite audiences with its story of love and destiny.
