Post Office Rose | Dogs In the Roof Print
Post Office RoseLove, loyalty and Patsy Cline

Dogs In the Roof’s upcoming production POST OFFICE ROSE features Helen Cassidy, Kathryn Lister, and Caroline Dunphy and introduces Jessica Veurman-Betts in an all female cast for the play which promises to break your hearts.

Remember those friends you had when you were 12. Remember what it was like to love someone like you did when you were 18? The future looked bright, the beers were cold, the boys were still beautiful and bitterness was a word you could only associate with your mothers.

Welcome to the Post Office Hotel where The Paper Roses, a Patsy Cline cover band, blossomed for a short time and drowned out the screams of the pigs being slaughtered at the abattoir next door. They were young, beautiful, idealistic and most of all, passionate about Patsy Cline. The band was a ticket out of there, a ticket to anywhere that didn’t smell of blood, to anywhere that wasn’t stinking hot, to anywhere other than the Post Office Hotel and it’s regular cliental of butchers with blood under their nails.

Fifteen years later and the bands, getting back together at the Post Office Hotel for their final gig.  Eddie (Caroline Dunphy) never left. She owns the pub now, keeping the secret that had to be kept at the Post Office Hotel. Louie (Kathryn Lister) has come back once a year, every year, for a reunion to talk about old times, old boys, old friends and old songs. Charlie (Jessica Veurman-Betts) has never returned - tonight is the first time in fifteen years. Patsy Cline, (Helen Cassidy) well she’s always been there. The only songs played on the jukebox are hers and her music and her melodies have been the only thing that’s kept the place from crumbling to dust and disappearing into the dirt.

A heartbreakingly beautiful story that takes you on a journey where the only possible destination is the past. The innocence of youthful dreams and ideals is shattered by the secret that’s been kept at the Post Office Hotel for that time in the future when the band gets back together. Experience the laughter, the love and the bittersweet twisted loyalty that makes those friends you had when you were 12, those times you had as you grew up, the only times that mattered and the sum total of your life.

“A potent new play…it is a well observed commentary on love, friendship, fidelity…a startling debut for Hassall and a powerful, well acted piece of theatre with much to say.” Brisbane News

“A rich and complex psychological thriller full of vibrant and eccentric characters so true you can almost smell ‘em…Hats off to director Shaun Charles who made sure that the rough cut gem of ‘Post Office Rose’ kept all its beauty, poison and passion” Scene Magazine
