The Phantom of the Opera Print
Celebrated as the world’s most popular musical of all time, The Phantom of the Opera is returning to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) with a spectacular production featuring the country’s original phantom and a local leading lady.

In a rare treat for Queensland audiences, Australia’s first Phantom, the extraordinary Anthony Warlow, will perform the lead role for the first time in Brisbane. Anthony has been widely acclaimed for his defining role as the Phantom, which he performed in Melbourne in 1990.

“To have Anthony in Brisbane reclaiming the role he made his own is one of theatre’s magic events,” said Producer, John Frost, of the Gordon/ Frost Organisation. “Anthony has been honoured by this country and elected a Living National Treasure. It is fitting that he introduces a new audience to this wonderful love story.”

The remarkable production will also enjoy a distinctly local influence with Brisbane’s Ana Marina performing alongside Anthony in the role of the young soprano Christine.

The longest running musical on Broadway, recently celebrating 20 years, The Phantom of the Opera has won more than 50 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards. It’s been 11 years since the musical was last performed in Brisbane.

“Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece has been seen by more than 80 million people in 124 cities around the world,” said producer Tim McFarlane of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific. “Audiences have taken it to their hearts and the production is still a truly magnificent spectacle. We are confident it will continue its incredible world-wide success in Brisbane.”

The Phantom of the Opera has been playing to rave reviews and capacity audiences in Melbourne since the national tour opened in July. The production comes to QPAC directly after the Melbourne season. The Brisbane season will open on 6 February.

The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealously, madness and passions collide.

With spectacular sets and more than 230 costumes by international designer, the late Maria Björnson, The Phantom of the Opera contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous music, including The Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based upon the novel Le Fantome De L’Opera by Gaston Leroux. Original London production by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group.
