4:48 Psychosis | Red Stitch Actors Theatre Print
Red Stitch is proud to stage the first ever Melbourne production of Sarah Kane’s final, posthumously published play, 4:48 Psychosis to be directed by Alyson Campbell (The Day Room, Fewer Emergencies) who is currently completing a PHD on Kane’s work before taking up a position at Queen’s University Belfast later this year.

Sarah Kane infamously came to the world’s attention in 1995 when her first play Blasted created the biggest theatre scandal in London since Edward Bond’s Saved.  Marked by startling, poetic prose and explicit sex and violence, it was also considered disturbing because of its innovative structure.  Whilst the Daily Mail described Blasted as "this disgusting feast of filth", Sarah Kane is now acknowledged as one of the most influential playwrights to emerge from Britain in the last decade.  Kane went on to write four more plays: Phaedra's Love (1996), Cleansed (1998) Crave (1998) and 4:48 Psychosis (2000) written in the months prior to her death.

In light of her tragic death, Sarah Kane’s last play is often described as her ‘suicide note’.  It is much more than that. Fiercely poetic, 4:48 Psychosis pushes beyond Kane’s personal experience and poses universal questions about the sanity of our contemporary world. First performed at the Royal Court in 2000, 4:48 Psychosis explores the anguish of human existence from the inside out. With brutal clarity and dark wit, the play is at once eerily lucid and fragmented.  Kane wields rhythm and musicality in language, for maximum visceral impact, together with spare, devastating imagery.

“Hypnotic, harrowing and strangely beautiful...a Masterpiece...an act of artistic heroism” - Daily Telegraph
