Dealer’s Choice
By Patrick Marber

There is no such thing as easy Money
at the Darlinghurst Theatre
from June 19
with preview performances June 17 & 18
followed by a national tour

From the writer of the smash hit films Notes on a Scandal and Closer and Craig Illott, director of The Pillowman and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Dealer’s Choice is a comedic exploration into male relationships.  In 2004 Dealer’s Choice was a sell out and has now been picked up for a five month National tour starting at the Darlinghurst Theatre in June.

In a London restaurant after closing time, six men meet every week to play poker. When one of the regulars can’t make it, the last dinner guest lurking in the restaurant volunteers to join the game, and as the stakes are raised, so too does the chance of boys becoming men, fathers becoming friends and losers just maybe getting a fresh start.

Dealer’s Choice proves witty and suspenseful and was the winner of the Writers’ Guild Award for Best West End Play and of the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy.

Dealer’s Choice stars six highly successful Australian actors and provides a rich showcase of talent. Making up the circle of Poker players is John Leary who has worked with Neil Armfield and featured in popular television series Water Rats, Ashley Lyons who played in the Sydney Theatre Company’s The Removalists earlier this year, Sam North who performed recently in the Griffin Company’s Stoning Mary, Christopher Stollery who starred in the Sydney Theatre Company’s Vertical Hour and Company B’s Ruben Guthrie, David Terry, who previously worked with Director Craig Ilott in Company B’s The Pillowman and David Webb who has also worked with Ilott in Edmond.

[Director,] Craig Ilott’s excellent production of Dealer’s Choice catches not just the play’s humour and macho swagger... but also the fear... Highly recommended. - Sun Herald

It’s a very good play given a fine direction by Craig Ilott. - Sydney Morning Herald

Dealer’s Choice is playing at various venues throughout 2009; Glen Street Theatre, Belrose July 14-15, Civic Theatre, Newcastle July 28 to August 1, Powerhouse, Casula August 4-5, The Glasshouse, Port Macquarie August 7-8 and Riverside Theatres, Parramatta August 11- 15.
