Anton Chekhov's The Proposal - A jest in one act
Directed by Jo Williams, The Proposal is a family farce set amongst the pre-revolutionary Russian provinces: When young hypochrondriac Lomov pays a visit to his neighbours, his clumsy attempts to propose to Chubukov's daughter Natalya end in comic disaster. Chekhov beautifully spoofs the ridiculous awkardness of first romance, a father's hopes for his spinster daughter and the idiotic greed of neighbours and their petty disagreements.
Before there was Jerry Seinfield there was Chekhov's hilarious comedy about nothing (and everything)! This three-hander will open June 26th in a double for GRADS alongside Peter Shaffer's Black Comedy directed by Meredith Daniel!
BLACK COMEDY - by Peter Schaffer
Join Brindsley Miller and his fiancee Carol Melkett as they spend an evening attempting to impress Carol's father and convince millionaire Georg Bamberger to invest in some of Brindsley's art work. Unfortunately things don't quite go according to plan, and when their small and cluttered flat is plunged into darkness, hilarity ensues. Among the chaos we meet Brindsley's upstairs neighbour, an ex-girlfriend and eventually a man to fix the fuse. Nothing is what it seems in this hilarious, one-act farce by acclaimed playwright, Peter Schaffer.
