On October 10, the Belvoir St Downstairs Theatre will become a dirty, depraved Texan trailer park wasteland as the antepenultimate play in the unparalleled 2008 B Sharp season takes us to the heartland of cowboy culture with Tracy Letts’ modern classic Killer Joe. Audiences will not only get to peer into the wood veneer home of the degenerate Smith family, they’ll do so to the dirty rumblings of gutter blues four-piece band, The Snowdroppers, who will be playing live on stage.
Chris Smith is 22. His dad is 38. Chris tried to make a buck breeding rabbits but currently…he sells cocaine. His mom found the drugs, sold them to get the Ford fixed and now he owes a lot of money. In an attempt get his filthy mitts on some fast cast, Chris presents his sister Dottie with a scheme that involves: 1) their Momma and 2) her life insurance.
Enter Joe: sheriff, misogynist, hit man; a cowboy who ain’t got no cows. Every man has a price and Killer Joe’s below-the-belt demands give the Smiths a run for their money as love, honour and trust are violated in frenzied force.
A coruscating black comedy with deliciously disgusting manners, from contemporary Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County, Bug), Killer Joe is as complex and tender as it is unflinching and explicit. It’s a boiled down examination of the American politics of violence with terrifyingly beautiful drama at its heart.
For the second time this year director Iain Sinclair (Beyond the Neck, Lord of the Flies, Hurlyburly) is working at Belvoir St Theatre, after his incredibly successful run with Kate Mulvany’s play The Seed, which took out Best Independent Production in the 2007 Sydney Theatre Awards during its Downstairs season and packed out audiences Upstairs in February 2008. Iain has invited Sydney’s dirty bluesy rockers The Snowdroppers to swagger the stage alongside the smart, bold and textured cast: Maeve Dermody (The Peach Season, Black Water, and the upcoming feature Beautiful Kate), Robin Goldsworthy (All Saints, West), Anita Heigh (MDA, Stingers, Dumbshow) Josh Quong Tart (Home and Away, Lemon Tart, All Saints) and Christopher Stollery (Ruben Guthrie, Sea Patrol, Bastard Boys).
Tracy Letts’ play August: Osage County recently received five 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Play and the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. It is soon to be adapted for the big screen.
