Noongar storyteller Dallas Winmar, who captivated audiences with Aliwa in 2001, is returning to Belvoir St Theatre on 17 September for the premiere of her new work, Yibiyung. And in her first professional lead role, final year NIDA student Miranda Tapsell is playing the title role.
Yibiyung is the extraordinary coming-of-age story of Dallas’ grandmother, who was one of thousands of girls swept up in the forced removals of the 1920s. Dallas’ rolling yarn follows the journey and survival of a young girl determined to return to her rightful place with her family despite powerful forces working to displace her. Yibiyung is a young, effervescent girl who some how disarms and enchants everyone she meets. Her story is a song of hope.
According to Director Wesley Enoch (Parramatta Girls, Capricornia, The Story of the Miracle at Cookie’s Table) Yibiyung comes at a time when the nation is starting to address the decades of anger and despair associated with the Stolen Generation, and seeking to find a place where we can come together and share the stories.
“The social policies of the 1920s had a huge impact on Indigenous families, the consequences of which we are still seeing even today. However Yibiyung is about finding a way out of the pain and moving on. It’s about spirit and strength,” he said.
Wesley has gathered a significant cast to tell Yibiyung’s story including Jada Alberts (Frost/Nixon, What I Heard About Iraq, Cat), Jimi Bani (Romeo and Juliet, Remote Area Nurse), Sibylla Budd (The Secret Life of Us, Ray’s Tempest, Sea Patrol), Annie Byron (The Small Things, Parramatta Girls, Embers), Russell Dykstra (Toy Symphony, Romulus, My Father, Stuff Happens), Roxanne McDonald (The Story of the Miracle at Cookie’s Table, Parramatta Girls, Radiance), Melodie Reynolds (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King for this Place, Booya Koora Koora), along with Bangarra composer and performer, David Page (Page 8, Heartland, Boomerang). Third-year NIDA student Miranda Tapsell is playing Yibiyung.
