Salome: In Cogito Volume III | The Rabble Print
THE RABBLE, return to CarriageWorks with SALOME – IN COGITO VOLUME III from May 7. Provocative and grotesque, Salome – In Cogito Volume III takes the biblical story of the beheading of John the Baptist and drastically re-imagines it, creating a tale that drips with taboo, sex and the sublime.

In a style inspired by Caravaggio, Romeo Castellucci, Robert Wilson, and Barrie Kosky, THE RABBLE have re-invigorated this classic text into an extraordinary piece of visual theatre – a sensory experience where the familiar collides with the surreal.

In the hands of THE RABBLE, Salome is the adolescent belle of a drought-stricken Australian outback town. A groomless, bed wetting, albino bride prone to self-harm, she rampantly pursues John – a German-speaking prisoner and occasional paraplegic. Her parents, Herod and Herodias (both played by men), are an electric couple – Herod is a masochistic Judo champion and Evangelical Christian and his wife Herodias, a hedonistic drag queen.  They spoil and torment their daughter as they teach her the ways of the world. But in a town with no water, Salome remains very, very thirsty.

The Rabble are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of independent theatre. Led by artistic directors, Syd Brisbane, Kate Davis and Emma Valente, this ambitious collaborative aim to create works that transcend theatrical convention both as enterprise and as an art form. With the intention of cultivating a forum for artistic exchange, THE RABBLE have also formed a community of associated artists which includes the likes of Catherine McClements, Dan Spielman, Robert Menzies, Kym Gyngell and Jacek Koman.
