This classic Victorian thriller by Patrick Hamilton has intrigued audiences world-wide since it’s first production in London in 1938. It was quickly adapted for a film starring Anton Wallbrook and Diana Wynyard but the definitive version starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the wronged wife. The story evolved from an incident in a novel by his brother Bruce and was developed into the play. Jack Manningham slowly and deliberately plans to drive his gentle wife insane. He almost succeeds when the help arrives for Bella in the form of Rough a former Scotland Yard Detective who is convinced that Manningham is a thief and a murderer. Having convinced Bella of his sincerity, together they set out to prove it and finally Bella achieves a few moments of sweet revenge for the suffering inflicted on her. This play recently enjoyed a successful run at London’s Old Vic Theatre, starring Rosamund Pike, Andrew Woodall and Kenneth Cranham. Director Sally Barendse has chosen a strong cast for this classic play. Robert Whyte plays Jack, Mia Martin as Bella, Rosemary Longhurst as Elizabeth the housekeeper, Greg Ross as Rough, and Danni Ashton as Nancy the maid.
