Oh What a Lovely War | WhipLash Theatre Print
Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.

Nearly 100 years later, in the shadow of Iraq, Oh What a Lovely War’s attack on the waste and stupidity of World War One is shockingly relevant. This is musical theatre at its best!

Devised by Joan Littlewoods’ Theatre Workshop, Oh What a Lovely War is a musical satire based on a radio program of World War One songs that will be presented by Perth’s most exciting independent theatre company, Whiplash Theatre, at the Subiaco Arts Centre.

Armed with sketches, songs and stories, an ensemble cast march on through the bawdy, tough humour of the trenches to take you on an incredible journey. Along the way the story is marked by a fantastic collection of classic songs from the Great War such as Pack Up Your Troubles, Keep the Home Fires Burning and It’s a Long Way To Tipperary. Oh What a Lovely War is a groundbreaking and stunning revelation of a conflict that wiped out a generation of young men throughout Europe.

“The Great War was one of the most pointless wastes of human life in history. Never before had so many given so much for so little,” said Whiplash Theatre Director Gregory Jones. “Given how easily a nation can become involved in war, I believe this is important to understand how society can give itself over to war – this landmark musical has it all.”

Whiplash’s first production in 2007, Six Characters in Search of an Author, was a sell out smashes that “hit the stage with a bang,” according to the West Australian.
