One Cloud | Lady Muck Print
One CloudOne Cloud tells the story of Stella Harper, a vibrant young woman who flees to a small secluded island named Paradise in a last ditch attempt to find her place in the world.

On arrival she is saved from the bottom of the ocean by Pup, reluctant heir to the island. Although at first embraced as an exotic guest, when Stella begins a romance with Pup, the island women work desperately to oust the interloper and maintain the status quo. Stella becomes more and more isolated as her very presence begins to raise questions and unearth secrets that threaten the foundations of Paradise.

The central idea of One Cloud was to explore the universal themes of an individual’s struggle to find a sense of self and place, via a fictional narrative inspired by the murder of Janelle Patton on Norfolk Island on Easter Sunday 2002. The story of Janelle’s life and death on this secluded little island shone a spotlight on a hidden world of small, patriarchal, closed communities.

One Cloud illustrates how the integration and celebration of difference is essential to the survival of all communities. It also grapples with the idea of how women themselves can be the instigators of their own entrapment, clinging to self-destructive routines and practices that perpetuate the cycle of oppression.
