Chanteuse: noun (literary) a female singer, especially one who sings on the stage in a theatre or bar where elegant people fall about in frantic and frenzied splendour.
Described by The Age as “a star in the making”, singer-songwriter Megan Washington is best known as a collaborator (Paul Grabowsky) and bandmate (Ben Lee, Old Man River). For these Festival shows the chanteuse debuts as a solo artist in her own right on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October at 9.30pm.
Performing under the moniker of Washington, Megan is breaking out of her comfort zone, and she’s taking her band members with her. In fact, none of them – Ryan Monro (Bass/guitar), Des White (bass/guitar), Ross Irwin (keys/trumpet) and John Castle (drums) – play their normal instruments. Audience members can expect to be similarly challenged. Does Billy Holliday’s voice work alongside the songwriting skills of Feist? Can indie-rock and jazz exist in the same song?
