Celebrating the spirit of collaboration, Interplay sees The Australian Ballet team three world-class choreographers with three giants of Australian music to create a world premiere triple bill opening at the Arts Centre in Melbourne on 28 August.

Australian audience favourite Stephen Baynes will choreograph a piece alongside American Nicolo Fonte and Canadian Matjash Mrozewski whose stylish and energetic works have been grabbing attention on the international dance scene. Their latest creations will be performed to brand-new music from leading Australian composers Gerard Brophy, Richard Mills and Ross Edwards respectively.

The relationship between music and dance is a powerful one. Many legendary ballets have been a product of close collaboration between choreographer and composer, notably George Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky.

The three ballets created for Interplay cover as much ground emotionally and theatrically as the artists who created them. A dreamscape of darkness, an abstract spirit journey, and a Greek myth are given life through these electric partnerships.

Interplay is the most contemporary programme in 2008, and is also one of the contributions to our ongoing project Ballets Russes in Australia: Our Cultural Revolution.

Artistic Director David Mc Allister said, “Interplay harnesses that wonderful chemistry that happens between artists when they get together to create something new; playing off each other, inspiring each other, taking risks together.”

About the works:
The Possibility Space
Nicole Fonte and Ross Edwards
New York-born choreographer Nicolo Fonte is perhaps best known to Australian audiences for his ballet Almost Tango, performed by The Australian Ballet to great acclaim in 2004. Nicolo is renowned for his elaborate choreography and skilful phrasing – one reviewer quipped that his movements fit dancers like “haute couture.” He is teamed with Ross Edwards, a key figure in Australian music whose dynamic compositions tap into the natural environment. The set and costumes to complement this formidable duo are by German designer Markus Pysall. Based on an abstract narrative, the work titled The Possibility Space is structured as a classic quest that moves through chaos to a higher state.

“I have two left feet and know very little about dance – but for some reason I can’t explain, my music dances.” Ross Edwards
