Robert Schumann’s rhapsodic piano concerto is a testament to the remarkable personal and artistic partnership he shared with his wife, pianist Clara. Through his profound love for her and his respect for her artistry, he fashioned his only concerto for piano, one that has become a cornerstone of the romantic repertoire.
This performance marks a welcome return to Melbourne by John Chen who, in 2004, at the age of 18, became the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition.
Brahms’ youthful Serenade has the lyrical grace of Mozart and Schubert, and finds the composer in his sunniest, most cheerful mood.
